The fourth of my short stories: the story of a privateer in search of an island
My unpublished stories
What you are about to read is an unpublished story of mine taken from the novel that I started writing in the summer of 2021. In it, a main story alternates with various small stories (for now from 3 to 5 per chapter) that the protagonist narrates at the end of the day, each with its own specific meaning and “why” within the plot. In September 2021 I launched a survey on the Middle East and Surroundings Telegram channel to understand how many were interested in the project and, to my great joy and surprise, there were many votes and all of them positive. Not wanting to reveal the whole work to you, I have chosen to show you only the stories, so that you can have something absolutely new and unpublished to read and I have an extra motivation to carry it on. My ambition is to write at least one chapter a month and thus make this column a fixed appointment, but in any case the stories of each chapter will be loaded all together and only and exclusively if the latter is completely finished. Precisely for this reason you will already find on the site all the stories of the first chapter “The sand and the wayfarer”: “”The Tuareg and the voice of the desert“,”The Sand Child“, “Atlas“, “The island that is not there” and “Hannibal“; and the second, which includes: “The tattooed young woman”, “Ashes of Sufis” and “Antaeus”.
Enjoy the reading!
The island that is not there
A young man from the desert once met a man who told him about the sea. He was an experienced sailor, who had his base in the City of the Island, from which he sailed with his crew to the infinite ocean, even passing the Pillars of the human imagination. The young man was bewitched by this new element, so similar to his beloved sand but rich in animals and without known and established limits; the very idea of “island”, then, aroused in him the most incredible fantasies, so much so that he never stopped imagining the charm that the City of the Island could have.
When the sailor returned, the young man chose to entrust himself completely to him, choosing to take off the clothes of the Bedouin to put on those of the corsair and go into the oceans that no one had ever crossed in search of wines and precious treasures. However, despite making a fixed stop from the City of the Island, he never managed to observe the island that had so affected his destiny; so, once the years of service under that captain were over, he decided to take a small boat and go himself in search of the latter. He chose to start his search late at night, convinced that crowds and noise were the cause of his blindness. He went far enough that he could not be observed from the city and close enough to be able to look closely at the coast in search of this famous island.
Only then did he light a lamp on the boat and realized that: the island was not there!
The man then exclaimed: “Oh me mean, I’ve spent my entire life doing infamous actions just to chase an island that doesn’t exist; but if this was my Lord’s will, I accept it without hesitation and may I fully enjoy the fire that his loving hands have prepared for me! ”.
As soon as the sentence was finished, the oil from the lamp fell on the boat and everything caught fire instantly, transforming the corsair into ashes and merging the latter with the sea.
